Oswego took 28 archers to the national tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, in early May. Seven of the students qualified for the next level, the World’s Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which took place last week.
In order to qualify for the World’s event, elementary archers had to shoot a score of 255 or better, and middle schoolers had to shoot 275 or better, according to coach Neal Cruse. Qualifiers were Matthias Shaw in both 3D and bullseye, Chloe Rhodenbaugh in both 3D and bullseye, Michael Varner in bullseye, Jazlyn Folk in bullseye, Aralynn Tun in bullseye, Oakley Gatton in bullseye and Odalys Santana in both 3D and bullseye.
“It was a tremendous showing for both our elementary teams and middle school teams,” Cruse said of the 28 competitors. “Our elementary team shot their season best scores in bullseye and 3D both. Our middle school team was a little off of their best. They had a very good tournament, however. I thought our shooters really stepped up against the best competition we have faced all year,” he said.
He said that Rhodenbaugh turned in an impressive performance.
“In the history of our archery program we have never brought home hardware from this tournament. Chloe missed bringing home a medal by one place and one point. Just finishing sixth was a big deal. It would have been a huge accomplishment for her and our program if she could have secured that first medal.
“I could not be prouder of our archers that performed. It would have been easy for them to feel that they were in over their head with the great competition they faced. We did not do that. We shot just like we were shooting in a local tournament.”
Two archers shot perfect 50s: Rhodenbaugh in 3D and Varner in bulleye.
