The Erie Red Devils boys golf team competed at the KSHSAA 2A Boys Golf State Championships in McPherson.
MCPHERSON — Bringing the entire team to the KSHSAA 2A Boys Golf State Championships, the Erie Red Devils endured a rain-soaked tournament.
Erie placed 10th as a team. Sacred Heart won the team state title, scoring 611 strokes. Syracuse was runner-up with 628 strokes, with Hoxie (643), Cair Paravel (664) and St. Mary’s Colgan (667) rounding out the top five.
“It’s my 11th year of coaching golf and this was the best record we had,” Erie head coach Bill Ruble said. “We had three first-place finishes, one second-place finish and one third-place. Going into state, we hadn’t been beaten by a Class 2A school all year.”
Erie had one golfer make the cut for Day 2 as junior Ty Barnhart placed 24th.
“He was pretty consistent,” Ruble said. “This is the second year in a row he just missed the top 20 for a medal. And he’s just a junior, so he’s looking forward to coming back next year to get that medal.”
On Day 1, Barnhart shot an 82.
“He was hitting the ball well and didn’t miss any fairways,” Ruble said. “The cut was 86 so he made the cut in good shape. Of course, he thought he could shoot better. He wanted to shoot in the 70s.”
Barnhart posted an 83 on Day 2, bringing his tournament total to 165.
Other Erie golfers included Isaac Myers placing 57th, shooting 24 over par on Day 1.
“He shot a 94 and did really well,” Ruble said. “We’re looking forward to him coming back next year. He’ll probably be my No. 2 golfer right behind Ty.”
Aiden Wilson finished 73rd, Cody Elliott 74th, Reid Duff 75th and Tanner Strathe 81st.
Duff, Elliott and Wilson are the seniors Erie will replace next spring.
“I’ve got a pretty good JV team that had a really good record, so they’ll fill in those spots,” Ruble said. “You just carry on.”
