Traffic stop leads to drug seizure

A May 20 traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal drug paraphernalia, suspected methamphetamine; a probation search of a residence uncovered additional narcotics-related evidence.

At 8:38 p.m., Sgt. Christian Smith initiated a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Broadway after observing a gold 1999 Chevrolet Silverado with suspected illegal window tint. The driver, identified as Travis Wilson, is a registered drug offender and is on probation in Labette County. He was accompanied by Sonya Demoss-Harrison.

During the stop, Cpl. Rory Johnson observed a glass pipe, commonly associated with methamphetamine use, in plain view in the vehicle. A subsequent search yielded additional items, including multiple glass pipes with crystalline residue, a medicine bottle containing a white substance, drug paraphernalia consistent with distribution and a machete in the truck bed.

Wilson allegedly admitted some responsibility for the items and was placed into custody, according to a release from Parsons police. Due to his probation status, officers and Detective Brice Dickens searched Wilson’s listed residence on Appleton, locating additional paraphernalia, a digital scale with residue and dozens of clean plastic baggies believed to be used in distribution.

All suspected narcotics and paraphernalia have been secured and will be submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation laboratory for formal analysis.

Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks praised the coordinated effort, stating, “This is a prime example of proactive policing. A simple traffic stop that was handled professionally led to a significant narcotics seizure. Our officers used their training, experience, and tools available to interrupt drug activity that directly impacts the safety of our neighborhoods.”

Patrol Lt. Kyle Wiford added, “Our officers remain vigilant, even on routine patrol. Drug-related crime is not only about substances, but also about stolen property, violence, and community decay. We are committed to holding offenders accountable while working closely with probation, parole, and investigative partners.”

The following charges have been requested and sent to Labette County Attorney’s Office: Distribution of certain stimulants, possession of narcotics, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a weapon, no liability insurance and illegal window tint.

This continues to be an ongoing investigation, and citizens are encouraged to “see it, hear it, report it.” All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
