A donation from longtime community supporter Louisa Wiener established a new endowed scholarship at Labette Community College.
The Louisa M. Wiener Endowed Scholarship was established recently with a $10,000 gift and will receive an additional boost through the Hughes Matching Fund.
The Hughes Matching Fund is designed to encourage philanthropic contributions to student scholarships and to honor the late Pete and Mary Hughes. The Hughes family has deep-rooted legacy of service and commitment to education in Southeast Kansas. Contributions of $5,000 or more to establish new endowed scholarships will be eligible for 50% matching funds.
The Louisa M. Wiener Endowed Scholarship will provide financial support to students of all majors and can be used to help cover tuition, fees and/or books. The endowment reflects Louisa Wiener’s enduring commitment to education and her belief in the power of opportunity.
In 1972, Louisa and her late husband, Bill, moved their young family to Parsons to take ownership and operate Power Flame Inc. Louisa went on to serve on the LCC Foundation Board for seven years. Together, she and Bill built a legacy of philanthropy throughout Labette County and beyond, focusing especially on health care and education.
Following Bill’s passing, Louisa has continued their tradition of generosity, providing impactful support for LCC through scholarships, capital projects and other vital college initiatives.
