Plating five runs in the top of the final inning, the Labette County Grizzlies escaped from the Parsons Vikings with a 5-2 win on Thursday at Forest Park in SEK League softball action., “The girls got out of their heads,” Labette County head coach Hannah Haraughty said. “The pressure faded away and hit like they could. They should’ve been doing that the whole game, really.”
Labette County finished with four hits on the day — one apiece from Karly Waun, Malaya Broadwell, Kylie Habiger and Charley Wilson.
Sierra Hill tossed all seven frames for the Grizzlies, allowing six hits and striking out six.
“It was nice to have her here,” Haraughty said. “She pitched phenomenally, so we were happy to have her back from FFA.”
Adalyn Morris ate the loss for Parsons, allowing four hits and three earned runs while walking seven and striking out three.
“I felt like Addy threw well all game but wasn’t getting some calls on the river,” Parsons head coach Shelby Liska said. “Labette County was disciplined at the plate and made adjustments that benefitted them in the long run.”
The Vikings, who haven’t beat Labette County over the last two coaching tenures, were on the precipice of a milestone victory against a rival.
“We played great in the field,” Liska said. “We didn’t have the best at-bats, but our defense was solid. It was nice to see. We just had a couple of mistakes in the seventh that hurt us.”
