TOPEKA – Gov. Laura Kelly, in accordance with Executive Order #20-30, on Wednesday, directed flags on all state buildings, grounds, and facilities to be flown at half-staff immediately until sunset on the day of interment, Saturday, April 26, in honor of Pope Francis.
“As one of the most influential leaders of our time, Pope Francis was a beacon of light. His wisdom inspired countless people to treat others with compassion and generosity,” Kelly said. “May his legacy of selflessness and humility be instilled in each of us and continue to live on.”
Book discussion set April 28
Sister Rosemary Kolich will lead a discussion of the book “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” by Erika L. Sanchez at 6 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Parsons Public Library, 311 S. 17th St.
According to the summary of the book, perfect Mexican daughters don’t go away to college.
And they do not move out of their parents’ house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family. But Julia is not your perfect American daughter. That was Olga’s role.
Copies of the book are available at the front desk of the library.
Farmers Market
The Parsons Farmers Market will open on Saturday, April 26. The final day of the market is expected to be Oct. 31.
Hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. The market will remain on Broadway Avenue in Forest Park across from the Labette Community College gym. Senior voucher applications for the market will be available starting June 2 at Parsons Public Library.
Visit the library between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for assistance with the vouchers.

On Wednesday, the Parsons Livestock Auction sold 800 cattle.
Choice cows 158-174, canners-cutters 140-157, shelly cows 139 and down, bred cows up to $3,050, pairs up to $4,050; choice bulls 185-214, lower grades 184 and down.
Steers: Up to 400 pounds, 370-482; 400-500, 300-432; 500600, 340-421; 600-700, 300-376; 700-800, 280-305; 800 and over, 220-284.
Heifers: Up to 400 pounds, 320-417; 400-500, 300-387; 500600, 260-345; 600-700, 260-312; 700-800, 232-267; 800 and over, 200-247.
