otes Benefit breakfast set April 13

ST. PAUL — The Knights of Columbus, Council 760, St. Paul-Walnut-Erie, is hosting a benefit breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 13, at St. Francis Parish Hall at First and Lafayette in St. Paul.

The menu includes sausage, eggs, hot cakes, biscuits and gravy, and an opportunity for a friendly round-table visit. The cost is a free-will donation and proceeds will help with medical and travel expenses for Karen VanLeeuwen, an Erie woman who is fighting breast cancer and the effects of chemotherapy.

Goddard to attend town hall

State Rep. Dan Goddard will attend the Labette County Democrats’ town hall meeting Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Event Center at 13th and Main.

The town hall will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5.

Sens. Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, U.S. Rep. Derek Schmidt and state Sen. Virgil Peck were also invited, but none responded to the organizers except for Goddard.

Sobriety checks Friday in Labette County

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Labette County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, April 4, in Labette County, according to a release from the KHP.

A sobriety checkpoint, intended to remove impaired drivers, will be set up in the county.

The location was not provided.

The goal of this checkpoint is to encourage compliance with the alcohol related statutes of this state, by removing drivers from Kansas roadways that are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, according to the release.

Sunday country breakfast

BARTLETT — The Bartlett Community Church will host a country breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 6.

All donated proceeds from this breakfast will go to the Hackberry Township Fire Department to support the fire and rescue services they provide the community. Hackberry Township Fire Department is located in Bartlett and is served by volunteers.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet menu will feature homemade sausage gravy served with biscuits, hash browns, scrambled eggs, egg casseroles, ham, sausage, fresh fruit, breakfast sweets, donuts, homemade cinnamon rolls, coffee, juice and milk.

The public is invited to attend. Carryout will be available for those who do not want to dine in. The church is located at 712 Main on the south side of Bartlett. In case of severe weather conditions, call 620- 423-1789 or 620-778- 4635 to check for cancellation.

Beekeepers to meet

INDEPENDENCE — The Montgomery County Beekeepers Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at Independence Community College West, 2615 W. Main St., in Independence. Joli Winer and Cecil Sweeney of Northeast Kansas Beekeepers Association will present the program.

Hive inspections can be challenging for beekeepers, especially those new to the adventure. Joli and Cecil will present ways to accomplish this as well as frame placement within the hive. They will also talk about making splits, to increase the apiary and, hopefully, deter swarming. They are owners of Heartland Honey, Spring Hill, where they sell honey, creamed honey, homemade soaps, lotions, lip balms, etc.

Farmers Market

The Parsons Farmers Market will open on Saturday, April 26. The final day of the market is expected to be Oct. 31.

Hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. The market will remain on Broadway Avenue in Forest Park across from the Labette Community College gym. Senior voucher applications for the market will be available starting June 2 at Parsons Public Library. Visit the library between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for assistance with the vouchers.

Gardening series

The Parsons Public Library is hosting a monthly series starting this month called Gardening 101, where participants will learn gardening basics. All sessions start at 6 p.m. on Thursdays and meet in the library. There will be no meeting in August.

The first session is on Thursday, April 24, on getting started. The May 15 session will be on garden blooms. The third session will be June 26 on garden to table and a cooking demonstration. The July 24 session will be on canning and pickling. The Sept. 25 session will be on garden cleanup and seed collection. The Oct. 23 session will be on spring bulbs.

Celebrate Recovery meal and bake sale

Faith United Methodist Church’s Celebrate Recovery will have its spring fundraiser on Saturday, April 5. Each meal is by donation. Dinner consists of homemade chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll. Meals will be served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the church, 3035 Crawford.

Dine-in or drive thru is available behind the church. A variety of bake sale items will be available inside.

St. Paul/Erie blood drive

ST. PAUL — A blood drive for the St. Paul and Erie communities will be from 1 to 6:30 p.m. on April 9 in the St. Francis Catholic Church Parish Hall in St. Paul. Schedule an appointment by calling 800733-2767.

Book discussion set April 28

Sister Rosemary Kolich will lead a discussion of the book “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” by Erika L. Sanchez at 6 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Parsons Public Library, 311 S. 17th St.

According to the summary of the book, perfect Mexican daughters don’t go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents’ house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family. But Julia is not your perfect American daughter. That was Olga’s role.

Copies of the book are available at the front desk of the library.

Blood drive at Labette Health

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, the sole supplier of blood, platelets and plasma to patients at 45 area health care facilities, is planning a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at the Cardinal Event Center, 1306 Main.

Donors will receive a CBCO T-shirt.

The CBCO is also partnering with four area attractions to offer free admission for donors who will receive an Ozarks Adventure Pass. The pass gives free admission to two of these attractions, The Discovery Center, Springfield, Missouri; The Scott Family Amazeum, Bentonville, Arkansas; Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Branson, Missouri; or Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

On Wednesday, the Parsons Livestock Auction sold 908 cattle.

Choice cows 140-159, canners- cutters 130-140, shelly cows 129 and down, bred cows up to $2,625, pairs up to $4,400; choice bulls 190-204, lower grades 189 and down.

Steers: Up to 400 pounds, 345-525; 400-500, 350397.50; 500-600, 320-383; 600-700, 255-330; 700-800, 250-324; 800 and over, 215279.

Correction

A story in Tuesday’s Sun left off two names on the list of Oswego USD 504 archery teams who received a trophy or qualified for nationals for their performances at the state tournament in Hutchinson. Matthias Shaw earned a trophy (top three performance) on the bullseye team. Bryson Royer qualified for nationals in bullseye.
