The Parsons chess team participated in the Royster Middle School chess tournament on Saturday in Chanute. The Parsons High School team was led by Lucas Fugate. Scoring 5.5 points for a near perfect day, Lucas won first place, a gold medal in the K-12 Division. Kyle Chen won 3.5 points and earned the 17th place medal. Teammate Raymond Oler earned 3 points. As a team, they scored 12 points and got sixth place. There were 52 participants representing 13 teams in this division. In the K-8 Division, Gavin Bocook was the lone Parsons representative. Gavin ended the day with 3.5 wins and earned the 25th place medal. There were 79 participants in this division, representing 16 teams. The team will attend the Kansas state chess tournament this weekend in Emporia. Eight students are eligible to participate in this tournament. Courtesy photo
