
OSWEGO — Rosa Mae Schmidt, 79, passed away from this life at 8:44 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburg.
Rosa was born May 26, 1945, in Columbus to Raymond and Carolyn (King) Rowton. She was raised in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School. In later years she attended SEK Area Vocational Technical School for secretarial training.
She worked at the Labette County Attorney’s Office for 10 years. She then began working at the Labette Correctional Conservation Camp, retiring in the early 2000s. She continued to work at the Oswego Public Library.
Rosa was a member of Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego, where she had been a member of the Altar Society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her favorite pastimes were reading and gardening.
Rosa married Edward Bryan Schmidt on Oct. 7, 1972, in Oswego. He survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Eddie Schmidt, Oswego, Joseph Schmidt (Tonya), Leoti, and Andrew Schmidt (Crystal), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; two daughters, Robin Billingsly (Dave), Oswego, and Theresa Schmidt, Oswego; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Faye Rowton, Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her father; mother; and a sister, Raye Clark.
A rosary prayer service will be at 5 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego. The family will receive friends following the rosary from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Mother of God Catholic Church, Oswego. Burial will follow at Oswego Cemetery, Oswego.
