CHANUTE — A low-scoring affair fell the way of the visitors on Tuesday, as the Chanute Blue Comets suffered a 38-37 loss to the Wamego Red Raiders in the Class 4A East Boys Sub-State semifinals.
Wamego entered the matchup with a 5-15 record, though this did not give the Blue Comets any security.
Chanute head coach Devon Crabtree said his team actually took practices up a notch in preparation for the postseason bout.
“We just couldn’t make plays down the stretch,” Crabtree said of Tuesday’s outcome. “We really struggled on the offensive end, and I’m gonna take full blame for that. I just didn’t have enough stuff ready for them against the switching and some of those things.”
After playing under the duress of a shot clock for most of the season, Chanute decided to slow things down offensively in its absence. The Blue Comets methodically inched out to a 14-8 lead, before Wamego battled back late in the second.
Patience turned to pressure in the second half, as both sides began to change the pace of the matchup.
