OSWEGO - Evelyn R. Karstetter, 94, of Oswego died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at Chetopa Manor in Chetopa.

She was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Deport, Texas, to Martin Luther and Clarissa Jane (Richardson) Smith. She graduated from Austin High School in El Paso, Texas.

She worked for Peyton Packing Co. and Standard Oil Co. as a bookkeeper.

On May 16, 1945, she married Everett Karstetter. They moved to rural Mound Valley in 1948. In 1959, they moved to Labette City, where was she was the postmaster for 19 years.

Evelyn was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oswego, where she served as church treasurer for many years and also served for several years as the secretary of UMW. In her later years, she enjoyed playing cards and bingo at the senior center.

Survivors include a son, Roy Karstetter and his wife, Mary, of Joplin; a daughter, Joteen Maxwell of Cedaredge, Colo.; two sisters, Mary Lee Bishop of Vancouver, Wash., and Mary Jane Porter of New Braunfels, Texas; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Karstetter, on June 20, 1994; and a son-in-law, Louis Maxwell in 2004.

The service was Saturday, Sept. 18, at First United Methodist Church in Oswego with Pastor Robert Conway officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Parsons. Visitation was from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 17 at Murdock Funeral Home in Oswego.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church of Oswego.
