IOLA — Tommy Kenneth “Buck” Rhodes, 83, of rural Iola died Friday, July 16, 2010, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 25, 1926, in Neodesha to James Frederick “Fred” and Mary Ellen (Allman) Rhodes. He attended school in LaHarpe and then served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On Dec. 28, 1946, he married Verle M. Williams. She survives of the home.

He worked for Kansas Gas and Electric.

Other survivors include four children, Peggy Gragg of Grove, Okla., Sue Rhodes of Morganton, N.C., Roy D. “Stub” Rhodes of Cherryvale and Mary Langton of Moran; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard “Shorty” Rhodes of Fosston, Minn., and Larry “Chick” Rhodes of Kansas City, Mo.; and a sister, Joyce Acton of Kansas City, Kan.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Kenneth Ray Rhodes.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel, Iola. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe.

Memorials are suggested to Iola American Legion for nursing scholarships and may be left with the funeral home.
