J. Maxine Barton, 92, of Parsons, a longtime Pittsburg resident, died at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Labette Health in Parsons.
She was born July 25, 1917, at Edna to George W. and Clara M. (Rexwinkle) McRae. She grew up and attended school there and graduated from Labette County High School in 1934.
She married Galen W. Barton on May 9, 1953, at Independence. He died on June 23, 1984.
For more than 40 years she was a house mother to foreign students attending Pittsburg State University as she housed them in her home. After living in Pittsburg for 58 years she moved to Parsons where she had lived since.
She was a member of the South Broadway Baptist Church in Pittsburg, attending there most of her adult life. She was also a member of the Crawford County Genealogical Society and the Old Fort Scott Genealogical Society.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons, where friends may call after 1 p.m. today.
Burial will be at the Farlington Cemetery.
