Diana F. Jones, 67, a longtime Parsons resident, died in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at her home in Altamont, where she moved from Parsons three weeks ago. Death followed a courageous battle with cancer that was first diagnosed in July 2009.

She was born Jan. 16, 1943, in Parsons to John and Winnogene “Pat” Schofield.

She grew up in Parsons and graduated from Parsons High School in 1961. She also graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in education.

From 1968 until her retirement in 1998 she was a business teacher at the Labette County High School in Altamont, with the exception of two years that she taught at Mound Valley Grade School.

From 1998 to 2005 she lived in Wichita, where she worked as a tour guide for Village Tour and Travel, especially loving to do the cruises. She cross stitched many baby quilts to give as gifts to friends all over the country. She enjoyed cooking and baking and spending time with her grandchildren.

On July 5, 1969, she married Leroy Jones in Parsons. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Marti Shields and her husband, Michael, of Altamont; nine grandchildren, Ethan R. Shields (U.S. Marines) of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Kyle Shields, Beth Umbarger, both of Parsons, Ryan Shields of Altamont, Kayla Shields of McCune, Derek Kellogg, Trevor Kellogg, Jordin Giefer and Keri Smith, all of Altamont; a great-grandson, Chase A. Daniels of McCune; a sister, Cindy Kelley of Overland Park; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date at the McCune Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
