PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. -- Robert Earl Thomas, 82, of Port Townsend, Wash., died on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008.

He was born on Sept. 16, 1926, in Parsons to Earl Houston and Ethel Grace (Maples) Thomas. He joined the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was honorably discharged and finished his education using the GI Bill. He received a master's degree in mathematics. After teaching in Kansas, he worked as a mathematician for Martin Marietta, Boeing and Hercules Inc. until retiring in 1980. He was one of the founders of Southeast Christian Church in Salt Lake City.

He married Winona Pearl "Toni" Bolander on Aug. 22, 1948. She survives.

Other survivors include three children, Angela Dawn Thomas Reese, Jay Daniel Thomas and Rebecca Diane Thomas; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, William "Bill" Thomas of Parsons; and a sister, Shirley Thomas Couger of Colorado Springs, Colo.
