Wayne Hobson, 96, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010.
He was born March 24, 1913, in Cherokee County to William Grover and Leona Ann (Hughes) Hobson. He was raised in the McCune area and lived his life there. He graduated from Osage School at rural McCune.
He was a well-respected, dedicated farmer and was able to take care of his cattle until he was 91. He was a descendent of George Hobson, who was the founder of the city of Pittsburg.
On Sept. 28, 1936, he married Venus M. Swearingin at rural McCune. She preceded him in death on Dec. 1, 2008, after 73 years of marriage.
He was a member of McCune Christian Church. He also belonged to the McCune CO-OP Association.
Survivors include a son, Col. Alan Hobson (U.S. Army, retired) and his wife, Linda, of Wichita; four grandchildren, Cynthia McCowan and her husband, Steve, of Topeka, Grace Hobson and her husband, Doug LaTessa, of Overland Park, Lt. Col. Lance Hobson, U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Jana, of North Carolina, and Mark Hobson and his wife, Robyn, of Shawnee; six great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Ryan McCowan of Topeka, Alyssa and Seth Hobson of Shawnee and Quinn and Caroline LaTessa of Overland Park; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie Hobson, who was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, Willard Hobson; and a sister, Eunice Bronson.
A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at McCune Cemetery with Pastor Gerald Zuck officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, where remembrances will be given at 7.
