Walter Warden Bryan, 90, of Parsons died at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society of Parsons. He had been in failing health.
He was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Neodesha to Charles Elmer and Sarah Mahala (Dowty) Bryan. He grew up and attended school in Neodesha. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Construction Battalion.
He was employed by Standard Oil as a pipefitter for 27 years. He farmed and raised livestock on the farm that had been in the family for 103 years and hung wallpaper as an independent contractor for several years.
He attended the Bethel Church of God in Neodesha and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Neodesha. He enjoyed playing cards and dice.
He married Jessie June Tafoya on April 5, 1941, in Cherryvale. In June 2008 the couple moved to Parsons, where they have lived since. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Bryan of Thayer and Frances McGinnes and her husband, Bill, of Parsons; 13 grandchildren, Eugene Bryan and his wife, Neasha, LeaAnne Johnson and her husband, Carl, Sherri Thurman and her husband, Gerold, Denna Sandbothe and Donald Scott, Alisha Sallee and her husband, Kristofer, Layton McCoy and his wife, Keena, Jeffery McCoy, Warden Cohee, Eddie Cohee, Teresa Prather and her husband, Keith, Jesse McGinnes and his wife, Tricia, Clinton McGinnes, Stoney McGinnes and Delinda Brown; 33 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Leroy Bryan of Neodesha; and a sister, Freda Grace of Independence, Mo.
He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Lee Bryan; a daughter, Delores June Cohee; a daughter-in-law, Cherol Brya; and three brothers, Elmer, Kenny and Harold Bryan.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Church of God in Neodesha. Burial will be in Shelly Cemetery near Neodesha. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
