He was born April 26, 1941, in Parsons to Jack Allen and Marie Katherine (Dowdy) Sumpter. He grew up in Parsons and attended schools here.
He worked at National Mills Manufacturing Co. in Pittsburg until he retired in 1998.
He married Twyla Mae Nading on March 25, 1961, in Parsons. She preceded him in death May 2, 1997. On April 4, 2009, he married Joan Anne (Mathewson) Law in Chanute. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, John Sumpter of Ottawa; two daughters, Janice Marie Larson of Chanute and Rexenna Ann Vanderford of Columbus; a stepson, Randy William Law of Norwich, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Diane Baumann of Stitzer, Wis.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and two brothers, Tony Sumpter of San Antonio and Max Sumpter of Oswego.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
