McCUNE — Neva M. Johnston, 88, of McCune died at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.

She was born Oct. 28, 1921, at McCune to J. Milton and Estella Pearl (Clugston) Grandle. She graduated from McCune High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College.

On July 3, 1945, she married Samuel Stephens at Girard. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1960. She married Clyde Johnston on Oct. 24, 1964, in the McCune United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1972.

Mrs. Johnston taught school in King District, Beulah and Monmouth. She also was a psychiatric aide for 11 years at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center.

She was a member of the McCune United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist for more than 40 years. She also was a member of United Methodist Women, the Order of the Eastern Star, Kent Chapter No. 117 of Weir, where she was a member for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Gary Stephens and his wife, Carol, of rural McCune; two daughters, Patricia Brunenn and her husband, Carl, of Columbia, S.C., and Joyce Caratura and her husband, Frank, of Leavenworth; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at McCune United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Eads officiating. Burial will be in the McCune City Cemetery at McCune. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday. The OES - Kent Chapter No. 117 will have Order of Eastern rites at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the McCune United Methodist Church and/or McCune City Library. These may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 114 E. Fourth St., Pittsburg, 66762.
