Ruth E. Hornback, 95, a longtime Parsons resident, died at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the Cherryvale Care Center in Cherryvale.

She was born Aug. 5, 1914, in Parsons to Richard C and Ella A. (Rundblad) Kallberg. She graduated from Parsons High School in 1932.

On Oct. 21, 1934, she married P. Donald Hornback in Parsons. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1984. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1986.

In her early adult years she was employed at several retail stores in Parsons. In 1961, she began working as a deputy in the Labette County Probate Court. In 1962 she was elected Labette County register of deeds, a position she held until retiring in 1977. In 1967 she served as president of the Register of Deeds Association of Kansas.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Parsons, and for 50 years was a member of a county Extension unit.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Hornback of Cherryvale and David Hornback of Arkansas; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death her husband; two sisters, Edith Hackney and Esther Diebold; and a stepbrother, Bill Fleming.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
