Henry W. Stephenson, 85, of Parsons died at 5:04 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in the emergency room at Labette Health.

He was born March 29, 1924, in Okay, Okla., to John Abraham and Susie Anna (Marsh) Stephenson. He grew up in Oklahoma and was a 1942 graduate of Lincoln High School in Wagoner, Okla. He then moved to Parsons, where he lived and worked before entering the U.S. Army in 1945 and was stationed in various places around the world. He retired from the military after having served his country 21 years.

Through the years, he was a Baptist preacher and an insurance agent and also worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., before returning to Parsons in 2008.

He enjoyed playing dominoes and cards, eating out and spending time with his family and friends.

He married Anna Dodson. She survives.

Additional survivors include a sister, Georgetta Rogers of Parsons; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Leroy Stephenson, Andrew Stephenson, Joe Stephenson, Elijah Stephenson, James Stephenson, Eugene Stephenson and Eddie Bailey; and five sisters, Irene Tarver, Emma Gaines, Lottie Lively, Beatrice Stephenson and Rosetta Stephenson.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Watson Memorial Church of God in Christ in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the church after 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
