She was born on June 20, 1931, at Sikeston, Mo., to Everett and Mary (Hobbs) Whittley. Her parents worked as sharecroppers, and she traveled with them as a child. She lived in Oklahoma and California before moving to Independence.
She married Wayman Huffman on Dec. 24, 1948. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1991.
They lived in Independence for several years before moving to the Kansas City area, where they lived for many years. She moved to Cherryvale after Wayman’s death and then to Parsons this year. She was a homemaker.
Mary was an avid gardener. She also loved to sew, cook and care for her children and grandchildren. She was known for her uncanny ability to make old things new again.
She is survived by a son, Jerry Huffman, and his wife, Ronda, of Wellsville; three daughters, Brenda Roth, and her husband, Donald Jr., of Oak Grove, Mo., Linda Smith, and her husband, Curtis, of Pueblo, Co., and Kathy Williams, and her husband, Don, of Ottawa; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Gilbert Whittley of St. Louis, Earl Whittley of Cherryvale, Mac Whittley of Gardner and Donald Hodges of Parsons; and two sisters, Dorothy Dingus of Overland Park and Marie Gamblian of Parsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a stepfather, a brother and three sisters.
The service will be at 2 p.m. today at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will follow in East Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 1 p.m. today until service time. The casket will remain closed.
