She was born Jan. 9, 1923, in Lenapah, Okla., to Jim and Lucy Marie (Payton) Bartlett. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Mound Valley, where she grew up and attended school.
She married Elmer Gwartney in 1940. Following marriage, they lived and farmed in the Labette County area. He preceded her in death April 17, 1954. She later married Harry Emerick. He preceded her in death in November 1987. In 1990, she moved to Parsons, where she had lived since.
In earlier years, she attended and was a member of Mound Valley Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, raising cattle and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include three sons, Jim Gwartney and his wife, Mona, of Chetopa, Charles Gwartney of Mound Valley and David Gwartney of Parsons; two daughters, Betty Morrow and her husband, John, of Parsons and Edith Olson and her husband, Paul, of Mound Valley; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Dollie Emerick of Hollywood, Calif., Mary Garretson of Coffeyville, Rosie Garretson of Coffeyville, Helen McDill of Coffeyville and Blanche Thomas of Wichita.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; a sister; and infant son, Clay Edward Gwartney, in November 1944.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
