ST. PAUL -- Vera Marie Groner, 96, a lifelong resident of St. Paul, died at 9:50 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.

She was born July 1, 1912, in St. Paul to Edward A. and Agnes E. (Long) George. She grew up and attended schools in St. Paul, where she graduated from St. Francis High School in 1929.

Following high school graduation, she taught three years at Moriarity country school. On Feb. 12, 1934, she married Eugene A. "Gene" Groner at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. He preceded her in death July 14, 1999.

Through the years, she worked as assistant cashier at Exchange State Bank in St. Paul and also served as secretary to both the St. Paul school board and St. Francis Rectory.

She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.

Survivors include a son, Gary A. Groner and his wife, Pam, of Leon; two daughters, Jolene Born and her husband, John, of Wichita and Jean Breton and her husband, John, of Austin, Texas; a son-in-law, Marty Kinney of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters, three children and a granddaughter.

The funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. The Daughters of Isabella and parish rosaries were recited at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Visitation followed.
