HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Charles Read Oakleaf, Sr., 99, of Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Mound Valley, died at 12:05 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at his home.
He was born Nov. 8, 1913, at Mound Valley to Orton and Helena (Read) Oakleaf.
During World War II, Charles served in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Mound Valley, where he farmed and retired as a postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service. After retiring, he moved to Hot Springs where he had lived since.
He was a member of the Mound Valley United Methodist Church and a 69-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 69 in Altamont. He enjoyed collecting arrowheads.
On April 20, 1941, he married Anna Jean Hite in Tulsa. She preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, C. Read Oakleaf and his wife, Donna, of Hot Springs, Ark., and Allen Oakleaf and his wife, Dottie, of Wichita; two daughters, Cecilia Paynter and Marcia Johnson, both of Hot Springs, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Linnaeus Oakleaf, on Jan. 17, 2008.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mound Valley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
