ATASCADERO, Calif. — Robert Lee Baird, 90, of Atascadero, Calif., died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Country Care Convalescent Hospital, in Atascadero.
Mr. Baird was born June 4, 1922, in Tulsa to Harry and Bertha (Fillman) Baird. He had lived in California the past four years moving from Mound Valley.
He retired from the Sante Fe Railroad after working 40 years as a train engineer. He served during World War II as a merchant marine. Among his interests were fishing, woodworking and flying his small plane. After he retired, he built several pieces of furniture for his children, creating family heirlooms that will last for generations.
He married Clorine Quiring on Nov. 8, 1943. She died Oct 10, 2002, after 58 years of marriage. A daughter, Kathleen Heinrich, also preceded his in death.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Baird of Atascadero, Calif., and Bob Baird of Derby; two daughters, Patricia Scott of Mound Valley and Nancy J. Moore of Sapulpa, Okla.; nine grandchildren, Daniel Baird, Keith Scott, Kristi Scott, Tim Heinrich, Tom Heinrich, Ashleigh Baird, Trenton Baird, Richard Baird and Shannon Baird.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Mound Valley Cemetery in Mound Valley with Pastor Jack Blackwell officiating.
