BUFFALO — The Chetopa High School boys basketball team used a strong second half here Friday night to take a road win from Altoona-Midway 59-47.

Altoona had a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and built that up to 27-20 at halftime.

Chetopa boys Coach Dennis Orns said the Green Hornets were a little cool on offense in the first half and relied on the long ball rather than working the ball into post players.

The Jets took advantage of this situation and shot the ball pretty well in the first half.

Orns said Chetopa played much better in the second half on offense and defense.

A big third quarter in which Chetopa outscored Altoona 23-9 and a good fourth quarter gave the Green Hornets a 12-point road win.

Derrick Cassell scored 16 points, including two three-pointers, to pace the Green Hornets. Brice Riddle added 14 and scored 10 of them in the big third quarter. Breylan Berrios scored 12 points, including two three-pointers, for Chetopa.

“Overall, we just didn’t shoot the ball very well,” Orns said.

Chetopa is 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Three Rivers League. The Hornets will host Jayhawk-Linn on Tuesday.
