The daughter of Keeney and Ruthanna (Wright) Charles, Nan was born July 21, 1931, in Atchison. She spent most of her youth and young adult life in Parsons.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School and the University of Kansas, where she met her husband, Charles Powell. He preceded her in death in 2010 after 56 years of marriage.
Nan taught in the Topeka school system prior to starting a family. She and her husband, a pharmacist, moved to Parsons, where he began work for his father-in-law at Charles Prescription Shop. They later opened the Powell Prescription Shop in Independence before moving to Columbia, Md., in 1971.There they opened the Powell Pharmacy, which they ran for 25 years.
Nan studied at the Jungian Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, a place where she and Charlie enjoyed returning as long as they were able to travel. She was a respected leader at Kittamaqundi Church in Columbia for more than four decades. Nan was an avid swimmer until her health prevented her doing so this year.
Besides her husband, Nan was preceded in death by an infant daughter. She is survived by sons Dr. Michael Powell of St. Louis, Mo., Mark Powell of Los Alamos, N.M., Bradley Powell of Incline Village, Nev.; and a daughter, Julianne Frazier of Columbia, Md.; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Hugh Charles of Parsons.
A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 15 at Kittamaqundi Church; followed by a reception.
