He was born on Aug. 10, 1930, in rural Cherokee County to Claude and Charlotte (Miller) Mayfield. He was raised in Chetopa and graduated from Chetopa High School.
He did construction and plumbing work.
He married Betty Jo Ballard on Aug. 7, 1949, in Chetopa. She preceded him in death on April 22, 1988.
He married Irene (Steinmetz) Smith on Dec. 18, 2002, in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Steven Mayfield of Sonoma, Calif., Joseph Mayfield Jr. of Fairland, Okla., and Michael Mayfield of Chetopa; two daughters, Mary Ann Stillwell of Miami, Okla., and Christi Moss of Oswego; three stepsons, Curtis Smith of Dewey, Okla., Steve Smith of Girard and Joshua Smith of Frontenac; two stepdaughters, Paige Ellis of Nevada, Mo., and Jennifer Smith of Chetopa; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandson; a brother, Carl Mayfield of Miami, Okla.; and two sisters, Virginia Mayfield of Tempe, Ariz., and Lucille Campbell of Bakersfield, Calif.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, a grandson and a great-grandson.
The service was on Monday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday at the funeral home.
