Carl R. Dean, 81, a retired Parsons city fireman, died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at Elmhaven West. He had been in failing health.

He was born March 6, 1931, at Fort Morgan, Colo., to Elliott W. and Gladys Faye (Beasley) Dean. During his childhood the family lived in Michigan and Ohio before moving to Kansas. On Jan. 6, 1950, he and Emma Jean Ellison were married in Fredonia. She preceded him in death on May 14, 2008.

Carl was employed by the Katy Railroad for eight years and was with the Parsons Fire Department for more than 23 years. He also farmed and raised cattle. During the Korean War he served in the United States Army.

Survivors include his daughter, Rhonda Gilpin and her husband, Mark, of Parsons; two sons, Bradley Dean and his companion, Marcia Bartholomew, and Wesley Dean and his wife, Laura, all of Parsons; six grandchildren, including Emily, Jim and Katie Gilpin; Ashley, Tiffany and Kyle Dean; a brother, Darold Dean of Oswego; and two sisters, Margie Murphy of Quenemo and Maxine Pinnell of Clyde.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Brent Dean on Sept. 23, 1968, and Earl Dean on Sept. 19, 1984; and a brother, Kenneth M. Dean.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Labette Community College Foundation for a nursing scholarship.
