CHETOPA — Eunice Irene Ventle Whetstone, 85, of Chetopa died at 8:05 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at Chetopa Manor. 

She was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Oswego to Joseph E. and O’Ava Opal (Woods) Johnston. She grew up in Oswego and was a graduate of Oswego High School. Through the years she was employed by Frank Farris Insurance Agency and the American State Bank, both in Oswego, until retiring in 1987.

At age 13, Eunice accepted the Lord as her Savior. She was a former member of the First Assembly of God Church in Chetopa where she served as secretary a number of years and, most recently, had attended Faith Baptist Church in Chetopa. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and enjoyed gardening, canning vegetables and cooking for her family.

She married Earnest L. Ventle were married June 17, 1946, at Chetopa. He preceded her in death Feb. 27, 1993. On Feb. 12, 1994, she married Ben R. Whetstone in Chetopa. He preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1995.

Survivors include a son, Danny Ventle and his wife, Holly, of Tulsa; a daughter, Judy Meadows and her husband, Stan, of Chetopa; a stepson, Raymond Whetstone and his wife, Nancy, of Chetopa; a stepdaughter, Carol Durr of Chetopa; eight grandchildren, James Fromm, Nancy Condry and her husband, Travis, all of Locust Grove, Okla., Danielle Dhiab and her husband, Ben, of Strasbourg, France, Hillary Irene Ventle, Thomas Lee Ventle, both of Tulsa, Rebecca Tucker and her husband, Gary, of Hayfork, Calif., Rusty Meadows of Joplin and Racheal Lowe of Grove, Okla.; 10 stepgrandchildren, Erik Schertz and his wife, Tara, of St. Louis, Josh Schertz and his wife, Rhonda, of Welch, Okla., David Schertz and his wife, Jessica, Portia Avery, Mary Whetstone, Johnny Whetstone and Ty Durr, all of Chetopa, Teresa Whetstone, Raymond Lee Whetstone and his wife, Jessica, all of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Ben Whetstone of Joplin; 13 great-grandchildren; 27 stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Johnston and his wife, Juanita, of Oswego; two sisters, Bessie Mayo of Tecumseh, Okla., and Wilma Collins of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; a brother-in law, Bill Ventle of Atlanta; a nephew, Robert Dale Johnston of Scottsdale, Ariz., both of whom she raised; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, two infants and Alvie and Dale Johnston; and a sister, Margaret Johnston.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
