She was born May 28, 1926, in Claflin to Anton and Jenny (Maguire) Friedel. She graduated from high school in Claflin and became a licensed beautician. She owned and operated Mary Ellen’s Beauty Shop in Claflin for a number of years.
She had lived in Altamont for the past 35 years. She was a member of Mother of God Catholic Church, Oswego. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Altar Society and the prayer group. She had also been a neighborhood chairman of Girl Scouts, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She traveled over the United States attending square dances.
She married Bertis F. Johnson on June 2, 1947, in Claflin. He died Sept. 5, 2009. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Rose Ann Strickland.
Surviving are two sons, Carl F. Johnson and his wife, Sheryl, and Kennie L. Johnson and his wife, Carolyn, both of Parsons; three daughters, Vickii Norris of El Dorado, Marcia S. Brawner and her husband, Kenny, of Poetry, Texas, and Mary Colette Cunningham and her husband, Harold, of Altamont; a brother, Larry Friedel of Grainfield; 15 grandchildren, Park T. Norris, Heather Hankins, Keira Mitchell, Buck J. Blount, Dora M. Blount, Jessica Johnson, Michelle Johnson, Carla Johnston, Kelly Johnson, Renee Johnson, Dustin Curtis, Sara Curtis, Jacob Johnson, Carrie Johnson and Cassie Johnson; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Monday at Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego. The family will receive friends following the prayer service until 8 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Larry Parker officiating.
A graveside committal service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton with the Rev. Stephen Gronert officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home in Oswego.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mother of God Church or Kansas Right to Life in care of the funeral home.
