He was born on Nov. 14, 1945, in Oswego to Manuel F. and Barbara G. (Franz) Giles. As a young boy, he grew up on a farm between Oswego and Altamont and attended Fairview Grade School. He was a 1963 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont and later attended Independence Community College, where he played football and earned an associate’s degree.
For a time, he lived in Wichita, where he worked for the city of Wichita and Coleman Co. before moving to Erie, where he worked at Erie Grain and Sohigro. He then moved to Parsons, where he was employed by the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center from 1985 until retiring in 2003.
He enjoyed music, playing his guitar and collecting baseball and football cards.
He married Kathryn S. “Kathy” Simone on April 6, 1979, in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include a son, Seth B. Giles of Lawrence; a brother, Darrell Giles and his wife, Teresa, of Fort Leavenworth; a sister, Barbara May and her husband, Ron, of Portland, Ore.; his mother-in-law, Virginia Simone of Oswego; and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Fredenburg of St. Paul and Aubra Giles of Summerville, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Giles.
The memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons, where the family will receive friends immediately following the service.
