OTTUMWA, Iowa — Larry D. Ortgies, 62, of Ottumwa, Iowa, died at 12:18 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2012, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born on Sept. 24, 1949, in Columbus to Earle and Dorothy Browning Ortgies. He married Teri Diane Rexwinkle on July 11, 1970, in Parsons.

Mr. Ortgies earned a bachelor of arts in business management and accounting from Pittsburg State University. He had worked for Wilson Foods in Oklahoma City then in Cherokee, Iowa, and in Albert Lea, Minn., before moving to Ottumwa in 1990. He had worked for Cargill Meat Solutions for the past 21 years.

He was a member of the Allocation Committee for United Way. His favorite thing was spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Teri; a son, Daryl (Jacqueline) Ortgies of Lenexa; a daughter, Jennifer (David) Bendix of Fairmont, Minn.; four grandchildren, Katelyn, Elizabeth, Mikayla and Brennan; a sister, Jo Ann (Harlan) Stork of Fremont, Neb.; two nephews, Michael and David Carrier; and his mother-in-law, Ella June Rexwinkle of Parsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law, Richard Rexwinkle.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, Iowa, with the Rev. Brian Gentz officiating. Burial will be in Kansas.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
