Katherine 'Kay' Rogers Breneman

Katherine "Kay" Rogers Breneman, 90, a former Parsons resident, died at 7:34 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, in Mansfield, Texas, surrounded by her family.

She was a 27-year resident of Erie before moving to the Parsons area. In December of 2007, her family moved her into a nursing home in Texas close to them.

She was born May 17, 1918, at Yates Center to Edward F. and Justine (Stockebrand) Light. She graduated from Yates Center High School and from the former Kansas State Teacher's College at Pittsburg. She attended graduate school at Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., and Pittsburg State University. She was a music and commerce teacher in several Southeast Kansas communities.

Active in the work of the churches where she was a member, Kay served as organist and choir director. She also served her Lord in many other facets of her church and community. Being the advisor for the Rainbow Girls in Erie was one of the highlights of her life.

She married Louie R. Rogers on Sept. 5, 1944, and they owned and operated a hardware and furniture store in Erie for many years. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1973.

She married W.E. Breneman on July 5, 1975, in Parsons. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1989.

Also preceding her in death were her sister, Bernice Reinking; her brothers, Elmer and Enoch Light; and two stepsons, Roland and Richard Breneman.

Survivors include a son, Donald E. Rogers and his wife, Cindy, of Ovilla, Texas; a daughter, Patricia K. Bass and her husband, Barry, of Burleson, Texas; a stepdaughter, Virginia McGuire of Moore, Okla. and a stepdaughter-in-law, Dorothy Breneman of Altamont.

She was also blessed with six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many stepgrandchildren.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church of Parsons, Chapter BS of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Parsons, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, Pi Omega Pi Commerce Honorary, the Parsons Hobby Club and the Morning Breakfast Club.

The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jack Dutton and Elton Garrison officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery at Erie.

The family will receive friends at Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday.
