She was born on Aug. 4, 1943, at Parsons to Harrison R. and Mary B. (Farris) Stover. She grew up and attended school in Parsons and graduated from Parsons High School in 1961.
Following high school, she worked at her family’s restaurant, the Hamburger Hut, to help put her brothers through college. She also worked for a time at the former Broderick’s Co. in Parsons. Joyce lived in Parsons for her entire life and had operated a day care from her home for many years. She had always considered her day care kids to be like family. She also worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart for about 20 years.
She married Terry Kirk on Dec. 3, 1964. They later divorced. She then married J.B. Peterson in 1972. They also later divorced.
She enjoyed softball, bowling, doing word searches, sewing, cooking and being with her family. She had attended the Baptist church in earlier years.
Survivors include two sons, David Peterson of Parsons and Darin Peterson of Muscotah; a daughter, Tammy Manues of Parsons; a granddaughter, Kayla Manues; two great-granddaughters, Avalynn Kay Manues-Keaton and Paisleigh Jo Manues-Keaton; a brother, Harrison A. “Poke” Stover and his wife, Lynn, of Lawrence; a sister, Judith Mead of the home; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
