Joan Mullen, 77, of Parsons died at 1 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at her home. She had been in failing health.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1934, to Willis C. and Francis A. (Hillhouse) Kisner in Sunflower County, Mississippi. She grew up there and graduated from Linn High School.

After completing high school, she attended a nursing program for two years and was then employed at Sunflower County Hospital and also at Humphreys County Hospital.

On Sept. 6, 1953, she married Jimmy L. Mullen Sr. at Indianola, Miss. She assisted her husband with farming and later operated a grocery store. She also was employed at Mid-Delta Home Health. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1991, and in 1993 she moved to Parsons.

In Parsons, she was employed at the Parsons Nursing Center, the Good Samaritan Center and the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Parsons and Silver City Baptist Church while living in Mississippi.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Mullen of the home and Michael Mullen and his wife, Brenda, of Parsons; two daughters, Karen Hutto and her husband, Fred, of Clinton, Miss., and Nancy Carol Fly and her husband, Gordon, of Duck Hill, Miss.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Johnny M. Kisner of Brazil.

Preceding her in death was a brother and two grandchildren.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. After the funeral in Parsons, she will be taken to Indianola, Miss.,for additional services and burial in Indianola City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Calvary Baptist Church and may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
