OSWEGO — Kenneth L. George, 68, of Oswego died at 8:07 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin following a lengthy illness.

He was born April 19, 1943, in Chetopa to Lelin and Lorene (Reed) George. As a young boy, he grew up in Southeast Kansas and was a 1961 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

From 1961 to 1977, he served in the United States Army. While serving his country, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and was recognized as an expert marksman.

Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm. He most recently had worked as a laborer at Bartlett Coop until retiring in 2003.

He was a member of West Mineral Eagles, Aerie 918. He enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors.

Survivors include a son, Lelin Haskell George of Conway Springs; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Glen George and Allan George, both of Oswego.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil George.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa.
