Verl A. Pontious, 95, of rural Parsons died at 4:43 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at Labette Health.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1916, at Hertha (south of Erie) to Arthur Theodore and Rose (Compton) Pontious. He attended Liberty Elementary School and later attended Erie High School. He later began farming and did this the remainder of his life.

On Dec. 24, 1940, he married Marie P. Burnett at Parsons. She preceded him in death on April 10, 1996.

He attended the former South Mound Methodist Church with his wife. He served three terms on the South Mound school board.

Survivors include a son and daughter in-law, Gene and Judy Pontious of rural Parsons; two daughters, Janie Page, and her husband, Max, of rural Erie and Janice Stahl of Pittsburg; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Pontious; and five sisters, Vera Rodgers, Zula Bailey, Billie Olson, Leela and Zelma Pontious, who died as infants.

The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery at Galesburg. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
