CHETOPA — Hazel L. Mayfield, 92, of Chetopa died at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at Chetopa Manor nursing home, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She was born April 30, 1919, in Bentonville, Ark., to Charles W. and Mary M. (Holcomb) Breshears. Hazel grew up, attended school and lived in various communities within the Four States.

Throughout her many working years, she found some of her most fulfilling job-related times were while serving as a very experienced and compassionate nurse’s aide at various local nursing homes.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Lawellin of Chetopa and James Moore and his wife, Ann, of Parsons; six grandchildren, Jamie, Stephanie, Bobby, Chris, Ryan and Gina; 12 great-grandchildren, Zach, Lindsey, Amanda, Monica, Logan, Jared, Dakota, Matthew, Andelyn, Gage, Jackson and Kacie; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin, Evelyn Poor.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, James A. Moore, Ernest W. Lawellin and Marvin W. Mayfield; two brothers, Charles W. Breshears Jr. and William H. Breshears; one sister, Lena B. Brown-Cooper; and a son, Charles R. “Bob” Lawellin.

Hazel was a very, very special lady and giving friend to many. She dearly loved her family and many friends and will be greatly missed and remembered always by those who loved her.

No further services are planned. Hazel’s body will be cremated and laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery, east of Chetopa.
