ERIE — Robert Bailey “Bob” Smith, 89, a lifelong farmer and stockman of rural Erie, died at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1921, on a farm west of St. Paul to Harry E. and Emma Jane (Bailey) Smith. He attended Mentor Grade School, was a graduate of Parsons High School and attended Parsons Junior College.

In addition to farming and managing his cattle operation, he had also worked at the Parsons Livestock Commission Co. for many years.

He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie and the Kansas Livestock Association. In earlier years, he had served on the Neosho County 4-H Council and 4-H Fair Board and the Farmers Home Administration Advisory Board.

He married Theresa A. Steinbacher on March 4, 1946, at South Mound Catholic Church. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include three sons, Ronald Smith and his wife, Sharilyn, of Emporia, Robert E. Smith and his wife, Elaine, of Hugo, Okla., and Kenneth Smith and his wife, Mona, of rural Erie; a daughter, Kathleen Elrod, and her husband, Duane, of rural Erie; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Slane of Chanute and Jane Swanson of The Village, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William H. Smith; and a grandchild.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in St. Paul. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. today at St. Ambrose, where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
