E. Leona McElhaney-Lee, 92, of Parsons died at 9:52 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, in the Emergency Room at Labette Health.
She was born Sept. 3, 1918, at Wathena, a daughter of Ernest M. and Melissa Fern (Ebersole) Hudkins. She lived in Arkansas until she was 8 and then came to Parsons and attended school here. She received her general equivalency diploma in 1970 and then attended nurse’s school at Independence. She was employed as a certified nurse’s aide at the former Mercy Hospital and later Labette County Medical Center, now called Labette Health. She also worked at various nursing homes in the area and was employed at the former Fred Ronald Manufacturing Co. as a surge machine operator.
On Oct. 8, 1934, she married Maurice McElhaney at Erie. He preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 1968. She married Walter D. Lee on Jan. 5, 1981, at McCune. He died Aug. 9, 1986.
She was a member of First Church of God, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for three years.
Survivors include a son, James McElhaney of Parsons; a daughter, LaVeta Walsh and her husband, Larry, of Parsons; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Hudkins and his wife, Babs, of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister, Hazel Foster of Parsons.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert M. McElhaney; two daughters, Erna Faye Wells and Betty JoAnn Brown; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Arthur Bennet, William Lee Hudkins and Eugene Hudkins; and two sisters, Virginia Souders and Bonnie Seymour.
The service will be at 2 p.m. today at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience.
