ALTAMONT — Alice A. Markiewicz, 74, of Altamont died at 3:38 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at her home. She had been in failing health.

She was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Liberty to George Franklin and Gladys Irene (Dickerson) Lee. She grew up and attended schools in rural Labette County and was a 1956 graduate of Labette County Community High School. She then earned a bachelor’s degree from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. For several years, she was a teacher in public schools.

She married Gale Mandevill. They later divorced. On March 1, 1977, she married Carl S. Markiewicz in Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death June 4, 2007. Through the years, she had lived in California, Pennsylvania and Nevada before moving to Altamont, following her husband’s death, to be near family.

She enjoyed reading, babysitting and traveling. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edna.

Survivors include three stepsons, Doug Mandevill of Houston, Bob Mandevill and Garry Mandevill, both of Caldwell; two stepdaughters, Susie Russell of Tulsa and Carol Warner of Carson City, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Lee of Andover and Charles Lee of Coweta, Okla.; three sisters, Della Davidson of the home in Altamont, Juanita Craig of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Fina Shearhart of Oswego; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will be at Edna Elm Grove Cemetery at a future date.
