Donald C. Lyons, 61, of Parsons died at 5:50 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011, at the Robert J. Dole VA Hospital in Wichita.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1949, in Independence to Edward Lyons Sr. and Wilma Jean (McKnight) Lyons. He grew up and attended schools in Independence until moving with his family to Parsons, where he attended junior high school and was a graduate of Parsons High School.

During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Parsons, where he lived most of his adult life. For several years, he was employed by the city of Parsons Water Department and also worked at Advanced Plastics for a time.

He was a member of Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church in Parsons.

He married Kathy Ford in December 1968. They later divorced.

Survivors include his mother, Wilma Jean Lyons of the home in Parsons; a daughter, Melanie Ford of Terre Haute, Ind.; a granddaughter; two brothers, Edward Lyons Jr. and Michael Lyons, both of Parsons; and a very dear and faithful friend, Sheryl Werner of Parsons.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Lyons Sr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. At the conclusion of the visitation, there will be a brief service with the Rev. Riley Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.
