BONNER SPRINGS — Winifred Louise "Winnie" Vitt, 83, of Bonner Springs died on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Merriam.

She was born March 15, 1928, in Walnut. She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She was a member of the New Century Club and was active with the Bonner Springs Senior Citizens Center.

She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and she loved being with her whole family especially her grandchildren.

She was a volunteer at Delaware Ridge Elementary School helping with the Pen Pal Program.

Survivors include 12 children, David J. Vitt of Brewster, Wash., Marlene M. Vitt, Lawrence E. Vitt, both of Bonner Springs, Theresa E. Thorpe of Overland Park, Stephan F. Vitt of Shell Knob, Mo., Debra L. Box of Prairie Village, William M. Vitt, Joseph P. Vitt, Richard J. Vitt, all of Bonner Springs, Alan G. Vitt of Lawrence, Daniel J. Vitt of Shawnee and Dennis P. Vitt of Bonner Springs; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, William J. Vitt in 1990; two children, Mary Ann Vitt in 1950 and Patrick Joseph Vitt in 1957; and a granddaughter, Courtney Laine Vitt in 1996.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Johnson Drive and Monticello Road in Shawnee with burial to follow in the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Eudora. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the church, where the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association in care of the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, 214 Oak St., Bonner Springs, 66012.
