GIRARD — Donna E. January-Garcia, 80, of Girard died at 9:43 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011, in the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Frontenac.
She was born July 16, 1930, at Independence, a daughter of Ogden and Amanda Evaline (Maloney) Fugate. She grew up in the Mound Valley and Cherryvale areas.
She married James R. “Junior” January on Nov. 24, 1946, in Parsons. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1974.
She was a homemaker and she and Junior lived in Parsons, where Donna worked as a cook at Garfield Elementary School and a nurse aid in Pittsburg and Parsons.
She married Arthur Garcia and they lived in Shawnee for 16 years. He died on July 3, 2003.
She was affectionately known as Moo Mee by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donna has two sets of grandchildren and two sets of great-grandchildren that are twins.
She enjoyed dancing, traveling, cooking, George Strait and being with her family and friends.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac. She was a past member of the Parsons PTA, the United Methodist Women and a Labette County Home Extension Unit.
Survivors include daughters, Winona “Kitten” Wilson of Frontenac and Carolyn Schroeder of Arma; sons, Rick January and Stella of Sugar Hill, Ga., Skip January and Louise of Smithville, Mo., and Gwain “Monk” January and Karen of Columbus; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Sarah Baird of Labette and Helen Evans of Parsons; and her faithful dog, Margarita.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Cody Schroeder; a great-grandson, Jerrick January; a brother, James Crater; and a sister, Alvera Erskin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard with the Rev. Lawrence Carney officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons.
