ERIE — Virginia B. Johnson, 91, a longtime rural Erie resident, died at 3:20 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.

She was born on Feb. 7, 1920, on a farm north of Pleasanton to Jon T. and Ethel (Ison) Slater. She grew up and graduated from high school there.

On Feb. 22, 1939, she married Wayne C. Johnson in Iola. After their marriage, they briefly lived in Chanute, LaCygne and Osawatomie until 1951, when they moved to a farm in Centerville Township south of Erie. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1998.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Christian Church of Erie. She loved flowers and spending time outdoors. In earlier years, she enjoyed working with her children as a 4-H leader. In later years, her main hobby was quilting, and she made many quilts.

Survivors include a son, Patrick A. Johnson of Erie; a daughter, Sharon K. Stirewalt of Chanute; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Slater of Galax, Va.; and a sister, Betty Secrest of Nevada, Mo.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Slater; and a granddaughter, Robin Buntin.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church of Erie. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie.
