She was born on Feb. 23, 1916, at Girard to John C. and Effie L. (Swearingen) Dunkle. She grew up and attended school at Girard.
She taught at four country schools from 1935 to 1943 and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. Following graduation, she moved to Parsons to teach at McKinley Elementary School. In 1953, she quit to begin a family. In 1967, she began working as the secretary at Garfield Elementary School and retired from that position in 1983.
She married Charles K. Long on Aug. 15, 1948, at First Baptist Church in Girard. He survives of the home.
She was a member of First Baptist Church at Parsons. She taught Sunday school and was a member of various classes, most recently the Amoma Class. She was also a door greeter at First Baptist for many years. She was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa sorority and several local clubs and worked with the Cub Scouts in past years. She enjoyed sewing, camping, gardening and traveling with family.
Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Martin K. and Colleen E. Long of Bolivar, Mo., and Norman and Veronica Long of Parsons; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John J. “Jerald” Dunkle.
The service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
