Gerald W. “Jerry” Elliott, 84, of Parsons died at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, at his home. He had been in failing health.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1926, at Winfield to Theodore H. and Faith (Dicken) Elliott. He grew up in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1944.

During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Navy from August 1944 to September 1947.

After his discharge from the Navy, he worked for D & D Farm Equipment Co. in Winfield for 14 years. He and his family moved to Parsons in 1962 when he purchased the John Deere implement dealership. He sold the dealership and retired in 1979. He had many hobbies, one of which was woodworking. He built two homes in Parsons by himself, the first he began at age 56, the second he began at age 70.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Parsons, serving on many boards and committees including the Building Committee during the building of the west addition and the renovation of the church. He was a deacon in the church and also served a number of years as church treasurer, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.

On Feb. 20, 1949, he married Glenice Ann Hill in Winfield. She preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 1991.

He married Wilma Scott in Parsons on Jan. 8, 1992. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Michael Elliott of Portland, Ore., and Timothy Elliott and his wife, Vickie, of Parsons; a daughter, the Rev. Kathy Carlson and her husband, Kenny, of Chanute; two stepsons, David Scott and his wife, Vicki, of Denton, Texas, and John Scott and his wife, Terrie, of Woodland Park, Colo.; five grandchildren, Kimberly Elliott, Jessica Elliott, Kassandra, Ben and Jared Kimball; five stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-granddaughter; a brother, Rodney Elliott of The Plains, Ohio; and a sister, Patricia Lindsey of Tonto Basin, Ariz.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Sarah Elliott.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall of the church from 10:15 a.m. until the funeral hour on Thursday. Carson-Wall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, and friends may call there this afternoon and all day Wednesday.
