IOLA — Vera Ellen Thurman, 95, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Iola Nursing Center in Iola. She had lived in Iola the past three years.

She was born March 1, 1916, at Covington, Okla., the sixth of 12 children born to William H. and Dorothea C. (Jordening) Bartels. She attended the country school in that area and grew up there.

In 1942, she moved with her family to Beatrice, Neb. In 1952, she moved to Wichita, where she was employed by Safeway Stores for more than 18 years.

On Oct. 17, 1970, she married Cecil R. “Pat” Thurman and moved to his farm southwest of Erie. Mr. Thurman preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1997. After his death, she returned to Beatrice to make her home.

Mrs. Thurman was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice and of First Christian Church of Erie while living in the Erie area.

Survivors include two stepchildren, Thomas W. Thurman and his wife, Darlene, of Iola and Sandra Kay Asbill and her husband, Pat, of Manilla, Utah; nine stepgrandchildren, Nicholas Harrison and his wife, Cindi, John Harrison and his wife, Betty, Shane Harrison and his wife, Karen, Anson Frye and his wife, Amy, Frank Frye and his wife, Jamie, Jason Thurman, Laynie Wrabek and her husband, Andrew, Michael Asbill and his wife, Carrie, and Jeremy Asbill and his wife, Jana; many stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; two sisters, Ada Nolte of Dewitt, Neb., and Mildreth Jordening of Blue Hill, Neb.; and a brother, Eldo Bartels of Daykin, Neb.

She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Linda Gail Butler; a stepgranddaughter, Edie Moses; five sisters, Lula Bartels, Leona Helling, Lorine Swarthout, Evelyn Dougherty and Berniece Wyssman; and three brothers, Reinhold Bartels, Clarence Bartels and Derold Bartels.

The service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery at Galesburg. The family will receive friends at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.
